Feel It to Heal It: Exploring Somatics at Twisted Grit Yoga
Somatics is a word that is circulating a lot these days, but what does it really mean?
At Twisted Grit Yoga (TGY), we love to help make big concepts graspable, so here’s the main point: somatics is about reconnecting with your body through both movement and awareness.
In a world of band-aids and quick fixes, somatics offers a deeper, more personal way to tune in, listen, and respond to what your body’s been trying to tell you all along. Trauma, stress, and even illness can hang out in the body like unwelcome houseguests, but somatics gives us tools to evict them with kindness, patience and awareness so we can heal and be empowered.
That’s why we weave somatics into everything at TGY. Whether it’s yoga, sound bath healings, meditation, or breathwork, these somatics-infused practices are designed to help you slow down and feel at home in your own skin.
“Awareness is one of the most powerful tools to relieve stress. Simply being aware of what’s going on in our bodies can be transformative.” – Yogi Amy
You don’t have to be good at any of these things to benefit.
We’re not in the business of perfection at TGY. Our focus is on helping you learn to embrace your body and give it grace instead of forcing, judging, or shaming it. We show you, through all of our practices and services, how to bring awareness to how you move, breathe, and hold tension in your body. It’s less about doing more and more about doing less so your nervous system can chill out and you have a safe space to feel, explore, and release.
And let’s not forget the power of touch. Post-COVID, hands-on assists in yoga have become rare, but we’re bringing them back in a mindful, supportive way. Somatic touch, like grounding pressure on the shoulders or gentle massage, helps relax and soothe the body. And, it offers a sense of well-being and connection.
“Some people go days without being touched and that really just breaks my heart because we need that. Touch is super important. It goes back to primal days when we still needed touch, security and warmth. And, serotonin is released when you’re being touched or hugged. It’s just something we need as human beings. Our body always wants to connect.” – Yogi Amy
If you’ve been curious about somatics, our Harmony for the Holidays Somatic Restore event on December 22, 2024 is the perfect way to dive in. This special 90-minute session, led by our dynamic trio – Tracy, Brittany, and Yogi Amy – combines restorative yoga, breathwork, somatic touch, and aromatherapy for a deep and focused experience. Tracy will guide the class through gentle shapes, movement and breathwork and will also assist Brittany and Amy as they move through the room, offering coregulating touch and pressure point work to help you relax, heal, and feel supported. In our studio, somatics isn’t just a buzzword – it’s a game-changer for how we heal and grow. It helps you get curious: What’s your body holding onto? How can you meet it with compassion? And, it allows you to tap into your body’s natural wisdom – a reminder that healing doesn’t always come from the outside; it often starts from within. We’re always here to help as you navigate new pathways to feel better in your unique body. So, whether you’re diving into Harmony for the Holidays or just exploring a class, know this: you don’t have to fix yourself to belong here. At Twisted Grit Yoga, you’re already enough and we’re in this world together.
